Project Update – December 2020

Project Progress

The first shipments of steel for the new breakwater piles have arrived in New Zealand and have been delivered to a local engineering workshop for welding into 24m sections. The piles will then be transported to site in Waikawa to be installed around early February.
The breakwater panels will also be fabricated off-site at a concrete precasting yard in Blenheim. Other materials and equipment have been arriving on site over the last few weeks and our breakwater contractor will establish on site early in the New Year to start installing the breakwater.

Other recent work on site has included load testing of screw piles for the new swing moorings and Simcox installing stormwater sumps and oil & grit interceptors in the reclamation.

Brilliant Backyard Expo

With first stage of the build complete, there has been lots of interest in Waikawa North West from around the country and locally. With this in mind, we took the opportunity to showcase the new berths at the Destination Marlborough “Brilliant Backyard Expo” on Saturday 14th November. The Expo featured local attractions for locals, and provided a great forum to talk to Marlburians about Waikawa North West in person.

With the restrictions placed on international travel by Covid-19, our marinas are experiencing a significant boost. According to local ship brokers, the purchases of recreational boats is at an all-time high, and this in turn is bolstering our waiting list for Waikawa North West.

TVNZ Breakfast 27 November

When we heard the TVNZ Breakfast crew were going to be in Marlborough to promote the region we thought Waikawa North West would be the perfect location.

We worked with Destination Marlborough to divert the team to the new reclamation along the shore of Waikawa North West, and the segment featured local Havelock stars, Mills Bay Mussels.

Art and Art Jr from Mills Bay Mussels were absolute naturals in front of the camera and the  live cross from our marina was great exposure in national media for Waikawa North West.

Waikawa Marina North West Open day

We hosted two open days on the Waikawa Marina North West Extension early in November. Those open days were well attended by local Waikawa residents and o

ur commercial tenants. The objective was for interested parties to experience guided tours along the reclamation area to see the progress made. We will be running further open days in the new year, when additional progress on the marina has been made.

This Boating season

This season is predicted to be exceptionally busy in Waikawa marina. The works at Waikawa North West will not resume until the peak festive season has passed, when installation of piles will begin in early February. We wish everyone a happy and safe Festive season, and will post further progress updates when available.
