Waikawa Boating Club Update
Marlborough Sounds Marinas is pleased to be supporting the Waikawa Boating Club with the publication of their History book.
An historical account of the Waikawa Boating Club has been judiciously, sometimes painfully but more often happily narrated into a document the club is about to publish. The auspicious timing of author Tony FitzGerald’s visits to the club office coincided with the club executives awareness of retaining and enabling the clubs old documents to not only be held securely, but to be presented in a format readily available and easily read. Tony leapt at the chance to put his genealogist skills to work ….. little knowing the hundreds of hours and sometimes tortuous paths he would be following!
Over the past three years Tony has interviewed, begged and borrowed off every conceivable person with a club related story to tell. Zigzagging his way through shared memories and sorting out the facts, some calls were a dead end – quite literally as we only have 3 surviving founding members – some people did not want to be quoted and some just weren’t that interested.
Luckily for us a great many more were alive and interested and encouraging of Tony and willing to share their knowledge of all matters “Club”. They generously have made available for publication their account and interpretation of events and milestones which have led to the club being as you know it today.
This is their story and it is our story. It’s the stuff which has made the club what you see today, the characters and even more, the overriding enthusiasm to get us here. Over 300 pages and over 200 photos from 1950 to today. To have this book published will be of tremendous value in the years to come not only to club members but for those with an association to the area.
Launch date is scheduled for the October 28 but you can pre-order your copy now for just $30.00 until the end of August. From September 1 the book will sell for $45.00.
