Marlborough Sounds Marinas – Spring Twilight Series

Marlborough Sounds Marinas is proud to support the Waikawa Boating Club as it launches the 2025/2026 sailing season with an Opening Day celebration on Sunday, 28 September.

The Club opens at 12:30 pm, with welcome speeches and formalities at 1:15 pm, followed by Electron motorised model yacht activities by the jetty and a fun race and cruiser sail past at 2:15pm. But this year’s Opening Day is about more than just sailing—it also coincides with the Club’s Port Marlborough Environment Award Field Day, celebrating its leadership in sustainable boating.

“With over 700 members, Waikawa Boating Club is setting the standard for environmentally responsible boating through its “Clean & Green” initiatives, which recently earned the Club a prestigious 3-star rating from Yachting New Zealand. From reducing energy use and eliminating single-use plastics to hosting beach clean-ups, “Clean Regattas,” and publishing a regular “Green Corner” newsletter, the Club is making real strides to protect the Marlborough Sounds.”

The Club’s Spring Twilight Series sponsored by Marlborough Sounds Marinas begins with the first fully crewed race on Tuesday, 30 September, and the first short-handed race on Thursday, 2 October. With 10 races in each programme, yachts will compete across designated courses in the lower Sounds area. All yachts are welcome to enter, and registration links will be available soon via the Club’s website and newsletter.

Waikawa Boating Club is also inviting new crew members to get involved through its “Have a Go” initiative, which allows newcomers to join up to three races at no cost. Interested sailors can contact Mike Williams at screaminchicken75@gmail.com to find a crew placement.

We’re proud to support organisations that champion both community and environmental stewardship. We encourage everyone to come along, enjoy the festivities, and be part of an exciting sailing season.

See you on the water!
