Safe Boating at Alert Level 2!
Here at Marlborough Sounds Marinas, we consider ourselves lucky to be able to support, partner with, and work alongside various businesses and operations here in Picton, Waikawa, Havelock and the Sounds. With the impending return to the water for recreational boaties on Thursday the 14th May, we are all thinking about how to do this safely. We captured some messages here for boaties returning to the water after the lockdown at Alert Levels 3 & 4.
Marlborough Harbour Master – Luke Grogan
Whilst boating activity is generally low at this time of year many boat owners will have missed the chance due to lockdown to take a final summer trip in their boat and prepare it properly for winter. Many will be looking to do that now. As such, our message is for boaties to pay particular attention to checking all their gear such as radios, communication equipment, batteries, engines, fuel, lifejackets etc before heading out. It’s been nearly two months and the risk of engine issues, flat batteries and forgotten or faulty gear is very high. Similarly, its essential to check the weather and don’t fall into the trap of letting enthusiasm to get out on the water result in bad decisions. If the weather is not right just go and do something else.
Being prepared and checking the weather are easy things to do but if done right, will prevent unnecessary demand on our rescue and on water assistance services.
Sounds Marine
With Level 2 on the horizon and the ability to get back into the beautiful Marlborough Sounds, we hope to see you all back enjoying your vessels, and the local retail, hospitality and accommodation providers. Safety is always important so please remember to give your vessel a good check over before you head out into the Sounds.
We recommend checking your engine & fuel systems, batteries, electrical systems, ropes & anchors, rig & sails and perhaps most importantly – your Safety Equipment!
If you come across any maintenance or repairs that need attention give us a call and we will get one of our experienced tradesmen on to the job.
Happy & safe boating everyone!
