Boating With Your Dog

So many of us boaties love taking our furry companions along on our ocean adventures, they are one of the family after all, but there are a few things you should consider whilst in the marina and out on the water.

Firstly, when you are heading to your berth or the launching ramp (or just out for a stroll) it is important to keep your dog safe and out of harm’s way. The best way do this is to keep them on lead in the marina until they are safely settled on your vessel.

If your dog is not used to boats or water activities, it’s a good idea to prepare them beforehand.  Dogs who are properly introduced to boating are more likely to enjoy themselves and not experience stress. Start by introducing your dog to the boat by spending some time on board when you are berthed. Use positive reinforcement to help them feel comfortable and confident. Repeat this again but this time turn the motor on to get them accustomed to the sound. Then, take them on a short boat ride and then progressively longer rides. Continue to offer praise and rewards when you dog is showing calm behaviour.

Once your dog is a confident passenger and you’re adventuring further afield it is important to plan an appropriate place for a bathroom break. If you are heading to shore on an area of conservation land make sure you seek out signage first before letting your dog off your boat. The Department of Conservation have different rules for different areas. Some areas allow dogs, others require a permit, and some do not allow dogs at all. If the area is approved for dogs, then don’t forget to grab your lead (and a poo bag) so that they don’t bother any local wildlife.

Additionally, you should consider your dog’s safety and comfort whilst onboard. Make sure your pet has plenty of drinkable water, a shady spot to escape the sun and don’t forget to apply sunscreen because dogs can get sunburn too! Although it is not a legal requirement it is also advised that your dog wears a lifejacket even if they are a good swimmer. The handle on a lifejacket provides an easy way to haul your dog out of the water.
