South Island Team Sailing Regionals

Port Marlborough and Marlborough Sounds Marinas are proud to support the Marlborough Colleges Sailing Team at this year’s South Island Team Sailing Regionals, the biggest regatta of the season for Queen Charlotte Yacht Club.

Sixteen teams and around 130 sailors from Wanaka, Christchurch, Nelson, and Marlborough are competing over three days until Saturday evening, in approximately 100 races, starting with a 56-race round-robin.

Team sailing is a fast-paced and tactical sport where each team of three boats works together to secure the best overall score. Success is about strategy, not just speed, as teams aim for a winning combination of placements. Each boat has a helm, who steers, and a crew member, who manages the jib sail and provides tactical information on wind conditions and competitors.

This event is a true community effort, with whānau volunteers running the kitchen to keep young sailors fuelled.

The Harbourmaster has stated that “All vessels are to remain vigilant when navigating in and out of Picton Marina, as there are yacht races occurring within Picton Harbour until the evening of Saturday 22nd March”.

Port Marlborough’s sponsorship reflects our commitment to supporting young talent and our region’s maritime community.

We wish all competitors the best for an exciting weekend of racing and congratulate Queen Charlotte Yacht Club on their biggest regatta of the year!
