Vessel Profile – Pelorus Mail Boat

On the 7th of October, the iconic Havelock company The Pelorus Mail Boat are launching a brand new custom built boat to service the Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds. The new service will be running 7days per week from November through to the end of April and bach and lodge owners can now get groceries delivered any day of the week and get affordable transfers to and from their properties – the new boat even has a beach boarding ramp so you don’t need a jetty.

If you are out and about the Sounds in your own boat exploring, and run short of supplies,or perhaps holidaying in the Pelorus/Kenepuru Sounds, the team at Pelorus Mail Boat can organise groceries and essential supplies for you and deliver them straight to your vessel.

For the adventurous types the boat is fitted with custom built kayak and bike racks so you can explore further in a day and hop on the mail boat to get back to Havelock. It is also perfect for accessing the Nydia Track, parts of the Queen Charlotte Track and the new Link Pathway and ideal for school camps with a capacity of 99 passengers with all their luggage and gear. The new boat is also more environmentally friendly in a number of ways with reduced wake, lower fuel consumption, and a holding tank fitted.

It is great to see that this new boat was built right here in Marlborough by TCC Boats of Picton, with engine and electrical fit-out by Beach Road Marine, Waikawa.
The old Pelorus Express has been a regular sight around the Marlborough Sounds for 30years this year. Built by Bill and Lindsay Hicks when they had the mail run, she is still going strong and is now off to keep working as a tour boat on a central North Island lake.

It is great to see the commitment and investment by Pelorus Mail Boat and their enthusiasm for the Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds. We wish Jim, Amanda and all the team a great summer and safe boating in the Marlborough Sounds.
