Smart Boating for a Safer Summer
Stay Safe on the Water: Boating in the Marlborough Sounds
November marks Water Safety Month, it’s a timely reminder for all boaties to refresh their knowledge and prepare for a safe summer on the water. The Marlborough Sounds offers some of New Zealand’s most stunning boating experiences, but its remote bays, changing weather, and busy waterways mean safety should always come first.
Before heading out from Picton, Waikawa, or Havelock Marinas, make sure your vessel is seaworthy, your gear is in good condition, and your plans are logged. This includes inspecting your engine, fuel systems, batteries, and safety equipment. Logging your trip ensures someone knows where you’re going and when you’re expected back—an important safety net if things don’t go to plan. We recommend becoming a member of Marlborough-Nelson Marine Radio to access trip reporting services, weather updates, and local support.
Lifejackets are your best chance of survival in an emergency. Please wear them. Carrying them isn’t enough if they’re stowed away when you need them most. In 2024, 74 New Zealanders drowned, and 90% of craft-related drownings involved no lifejacket—a sobering reminder that wearing one can save your life.
Communication is critical. Always carry at least two waterproof ways to call for help, such as a VHF radio and a mobile phone in a waterproof case, or an EPIRB or personal locator beacon. These tools can also be lifesavers if something goes wrong.
Weather in the Sounds can change quickly. Always check the marine forecast before you go and avoid heading out in poor conditions, especially in exposed areas like the Outer Sounds or Cook Strait. Use apps or marine radios to stay updated while you’re on the water.
If you’re new to boating or want to brush up on your skills, Coastguard NZ offers excellent training options, including Day Skipper and VHF radio courses. You can also register for Safer Boating workshops through the Marlborough District Council here: Register for Safer Boating Workshops
We also encourage all boaties to become members of Coastguard NZ. Membership supports vital rescue services and gives you peace of mind knowing help is close if you need it. Sign up here.
Enjoy the beauty of the Sounds responsibly—because we all play a part in making every trip a safe one.
