Heavy Rain Hits Marlborough: What You Need to Know

Harbourmaster Jake Oliver has advised boaties to be extra vigilant if heading out into the Marlborough Sounds.
“The extended heavy rainfall we are experiencing can cause more debris—and often large logs—to be washed into the water,” said Jake. Reduced visibility from murky water can make these hazards difficult to spot.
He advised that “people should not head out onto the water unless it is absolutely necessary.” Even after the weather system has passed, it’s essential to remain cautious, as debris may linger for some time.
Beyond the waterways, heavy rain is causing serious issues for road travel as well.
NZTA warns that “heavy rain significantly increases the risk of flooding and slips across the highway network, and many local roads in Blenheim are now closed.” Drivers heading to Marlborough should be prepared for wet-weather hazards, drive to the conditions, and avoid floodwaters, which may conceal strong currents or road damage.
A Heavy Rain Watch issued by MetService New Zealand remains in place for 33 hours, from 9am Thursday 26 June to 6pm Friday 27 June. It has been extended to include all of Marlborough north of Seddon. Strong Wind Watches also apply across the region.
